SHEFFEILD CLAY

At Maine Clay, we work exclusively with mid-range clays from Sheffield Pottery. These clays are mined and mixed in Sheffield, Massachusetts, 207 miles from us here on Hanover Street. It’s the closest commercial clay manufacturer available to us, and that proximity matters. It keeps the material grounded here in New England in a way that feels tangible and real.

This is also the clay Linda learned on and has worked with for decades. Sheffield has been in operation for 80 years, now across three generations, and that continuity shows up in their products. What they make is remarkably consistent—from bag to bag, batch to batch, year to year, decade to decade.

A lot of that consistency comes down to how they work. Their batching system is incredibly precise. Their equipment was engineered in-house to measure materials down to a tenth of a pound, even at scale, and their screening process is just as rigorous. That level of consistency isn’t accidental. It’s designed, built, and maintained through a deep care for process. But we’re here for the clay itself.

Much of the Sheffield line is built around a local clay deposit on the Cowen family farm, formed from prehistoric glacial runoff. A slow accumulation of fine sediment over time, settled into a dense and remarkably pure clay. That purity contributes directly to the consistency of these clay bodies.

And what’s striking is how that history still shows up in the present. The clay isn’t pulled from some distant, abstract site. It’s gathered from a small pond on the farm, periodically mined as it reveals that same fine sediment. The scale is intimate. The material moves from a quiet, almost unassuming landscape into the studio, carrying that longer geologic story with it. It feels continuous.

This isn’t a massive, abstracted extraction process. It’s a small, ongoing operation tied to a specific place. Mining is inherently disruptive, but here it happens in a way that feels more contained, more considered, and more connected to the place it comes from.

In many of the clays we use, that native material isn’t just one ingredient among many but rather the foundation itself. Each body is formulated to highlight and enhance the properties of that clay deposit.
